If you can read this, you've found our new server! Carload is now hosted by GoDaddy.com, and everything looks good so far.

I finally got a chance to return to the Mesa Drive-In so I could take a picture of the marquee now that there are three screens on the property. It looks a lot like the old marquee, but please feel free to take a look at my new photo.

What a sad day! I've been running this site (in various incarnations) for over seven years, and for the first time, I have confirmed the closure of a Colorado drive-in. The Kar Vu Drive-In in Springfiend has sold, and plans are for it to be torn down and replaced with a hotel. With the demise of the Rocket in Durango, we're down to 10 active Colorado drive-ins.

April 7, 2005

We're back! Did you miss us? Colorado's drive-ins are warming up for another season, and we'll try to keep track of it all.

April 7, 2005

According to the Durango Herald, the Rocket may soon be converted into a housing development. Does this mean it's really closed for good?

The Daily Aztec, San Diego State's student newspaper, noticed that the drive-in makes a good, cheap date. As Joe Bob once put it, I'm surprised that anyone has to explain this.

If you're going to knock down a drive-in and turn in into a winery, (it happens), I suppose that you really ought to show movies there once in a while. That's what's happening at Bel-Aire Estates Winery near St. Ansger IA. (The note is 2/3 of the way down that linked page.)

August 27, 2009

Woohoo! Another new drive-in is opening. This one is the Goochland Drive-In Theater in Sandy Hook VA.

August 26, 2009

The Starlight Six Drive-In Theater in Atlanta is celebrating its 60th anniversary this September.

It's rare when a drive-in closes because of bad attendance, but that's supposedly what happened at the Skyline Drive-In in Barstow CA. The good news is that the property owner says that it will soon open under new management.

August 25, 2009

The Cañon City Daily Record has a sad story that the owners of the Mesa in Pueblo have apparently been thwarted in their attempts to build a new drive-in near Cañon City.

August 18, 2009

Model A Fords are invading Newton IA, and although they didn't say what drive-in they came to visit, we know it's the Valle.

August 17, 2009

Another Great Idea: The Tower Drive-In in Rule TX opens its snack bar for lunch as a restaurant. I often say that because film distributors take most of the box office receipts, a drive-in is really a seasonal restaurant that requires a lot of space.

August 16, 2009

Ooh! Here's a slide show of the Route 66 Drive-In in Carthage MO.

There are still two drive-ins to choose from for the lucky residents of Erie County PA

August 13, 2009

That's more like it. In Gloucester MA, they're doing "just like a drive-in" outdoor movies. But these folks are doing it right; patrons watch from their cars.

August 11, 2009

The Columbia Missourian has a few nice photos and a short story about the drive-in in Moberly MO. Most drive-ins are named the "Something" Drive-In, but this theater's name is the Moberly Five-And-Drive.

August 10, 2009

NPR has a story you can hear about the "Low-Cost Glories" of drive-ins, and the Cumberland PA drive-in in particular.

August 9, 2009

The Galaxy Drive-In in Ennis TX is doing great and planning to add a fifth screen, according to a story in the Dallas Morning News.

August 8, 2009

The Aut-O-Rama Twin Drive-In in North Ridgeville OH successfully sued a new athletic field on the other side of its highway because the lit fields caused glare and shadows on its screens.

August 7, 2009

WJRT-TV has a great video report, complete with flashing neon marquee, on the US 23 Highway Drive-In in Mundy Township OH adding a third screen.

August 2, 2009

Another brand-new drive-in is opening this month. This one is the Goochland Drive-in in Hadensville VA.

August 2, 2009

The Memphis Commercial Appeal has a nice long article, with pictures, about the Summer Drive-In, still going strong as "the Mid-South's last outdoor cinema."

August 1, 2009

Just a quick note: This is the time of year I run into a gazillion stories about some "movie in the park" programs that get praised as being just like the drive-ins that used to be down the street. They're not. Sitting in a car is different than sitting in a lawn chair. Some temporary screen is not the same as the huge screens that real drive-ins have. You get the idea. Somewhere, there's probably a "park movie" web site. Carload isn't that site. Nuff said.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel has a nice drive-in article today, mostly about the Star in Montrose (CO this time) and its owner, my old buddy Pam Friend. Be sure to also check the great slide show about the Star!
